Aquaculture Technician - Mainstream Aquaculture
Overview:
We are seeking dedicated and detail-oriented Aquaculture Technicians to join our team. As an Aquaculture Technician, you will work in all aspects of fish production, fish handling, harvesting, sales, environmental management and maintenance. Mainstream Aquaculture’s Arizona site produces Barramundi – Australia’s finest dining fish. If you have a passion for sustainable aquaculture, work well in teams, are a good communicator, enjoy hands on tasks and able to work on a remote site, this could be your perfect job.
Mainstream operates the largest barramundi-based aquaculture business in Australia deploying a mix of world leading RAS technology and traditional land based open pond farming methods. Mainstream’s Arizona site provides an opportunity to become a foundational team member in Mainstream’s US operations and to join a global team deploying sustainable aquaculture practices and providing great tasting quality fish to global markets.
The site is located approximately 1 hour 45 min from Phoenix and 1 hour from Yuma. Local towns include Gila Bend and Dateland. Requirements for the role:
- You must be eligible to work in the U.S. and be proficient with English.
- We do not require you to have specific experience with Barramundi, but you must have appropriate farming experience or formal training in aquaculture or a related industry.
- Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- Team-oriented positive attitude.
- Self-motivated and strong work ethic.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions.
- Comfortable working in a remote aquaculture setting.
- Valid Driver’s License

Specific Responsibilities:
Our Aquaculture Technicians typically work as part of small workgroups managed by site supervisors and are involved in all aspects of aquaculture production and delivery to market. As an Aquaculture Technician, you will work dynamically across three main workstreams. You will gain broad experience in a range of routine activities and have the opportunity to contribute to non-routine activities, such as the implementation and commissioning of new equipment and the delivery of capital works and research and development projects.
The three broad workstreams are:
1. Fish production and environment. Includes the environmental monitoring and management of culture environments, feeding, grading and data management of production stock.
2. Operations. Includes operational activities of moving fish, harvesting and packaging fish for market. Also includes integrated cropping activities as all water used on the site for aquaculture is re-used for cropping creating a fully closed (zero water release) operation.
3. Maintenance. Includes implementation and maintenance of aquaculture and farming equipment. With RAS aquaculture this includes water filtration, aeration, fish handling and feeding equipment in addition to electronic controls, sensors and monitoring.
Examples Tasks:
- Perform fish husbandry tasks such as feeding and environmental management.
- Perform fish handling tasks such as grading, harvesting, packing.
- Perform maintenance tasks including upkeep of equipment and facilities.
- Operate farm equipment, including pallet jacks and forklifts, fish pumps, harvesters.
- Enter, use and report data in computer database and excel.
- Assist with improvement and development projects.
- Maintain farm safety at all times; comply with company health and safety guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and organized (5S-guided) working environment.
- Work collaboratively with team members to deliver workplans.
- Take direction from supervisors and managers.
- Other duties as assigned.
