Hatchery Technician - Island Creek Oysters
Hatchery Technician
Island Creek Oysters (ICO) is a mission-based brand engaged in promoting the development of aquaculture’s role in our food systems—locally and globally.
Island Creek Shellfish Farm (ICSF) is the foundation of ICO. A well-known oyster farm in the U.S., ICSF is dedicated to producing the highest quality products possible. The hatchery is the fundamental part of our business and we are ever-evolving our techniques to maximize production capabilities. ICSF is eager to have employees who are happy to take on the challenge of developing the hatchery to its fullest potential. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience within the aquaculture field. We are looking for seasonal, part-time, and full-time employees for the 2025 hatchery season.
ROLE:
●Cleaning - follow protocols for cleaning tasks related to hatchery work and algae culture processes
● Microalgal culture
- media preparation, inoculations (stock cultures, carboys, kalwalls, batch tanks, photo-bioreactors), counting, culture health assessment, and water quality monitoring
● Feeding - calculate and understand feeding regimes for all stages of the hatchery
● Broodstock - daily maintenance, conditioning process evaluations, spawning procedures
● Larval culture - water changes, larval counting, health assessment, restocking, and feeding
● Setting & post-set - setting system preparation, larval stocking, daily maintenance, daily health assessments; seed
grading, restocking, cleaning post-set systems
● Data collection - keep detailed and organized records daily for all hatchery processes
● Land-based upwellers - daily cleaning, maintenance, and seed grading
REQUIREMENTS:
● Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly
● Ability to bend down, stand, kneel or climb ladders for extended periods of time
● Work in all conditions including heat, humidity, cold, etc.
● Flexibility of schedule including 8+ hour days, weekend shifts, and holiday coverage
● Valid driver’s license and mode of transportation
● Have an upbeat personality and positive attitude
● Ability to complete repetitive tasks well and efficiently
STRONG PREFERENCE:
● College degree or higher
● Experience in a research or commercial shellfish hatchery
