USFWS Bird Depredation Permit Renewal Reminder

Those possessing a USFWS Bird Depredation Permit must submit a renewal application 30 days prior to expiration, or by November 30, 2025, to continue authorized activities while the Service processes the renewal.

The USFWS ePermits team has sent reminders to permit holders with additional instructions. You can view your permits and applications through your ePermits login. USFWS provided the following guidance for December reporting:

  1. If you do not expect take in December, you may submit your complete report with renewal.
  2. If you submit a complete report but end up taking in December, you may submit an amended report later.
  3. If you expect take in December, you may submit your renewal without the report—just be sure to attach the report as soon as possible in January. Renewal will not be processed without the report, which is why applications must be submitted by December 1 to operate under continuance.

Permittees should access their ePermits account for renewal and reach out to USFWS with questions or login issues.

NIFA Awards $1.7 Million for U.S. Aquaculture Research

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has announced $1.7 million in funding for six competitive research projects through the Special Research Grants for Aquaculture Research program. These investments support applied research to advance environmentally and economically sustainable aquaculture systems, helping address industry challenges, boost farm profitability, strengthen domestic food security, and reduce the nation’s $17 billion seafood trade deficit. The 2025 awardees include Ballard Fish and Oyster Company LLC, Oregon State University, Southeastern Sea Products Inc., Stony Brook University, Mississippi State University, and the University of Maryland.

NAA Welcomes New Leadership

The NAA welcomed two key leadership additions this year, strengthening its capacity to advance industry priorities. Executive Director Caitlyn Czajkowski brings deep expertise in biology, aquaculture research, and federal policy. In October, the NAA welcomed Maria Smithson as Director of Membership and Marketing, bringing extensive experience in government affairs, membership engagement, and strategic communications. Together, their complementary skill sets position the NAA to enhance support for producers, elevate national advocacy efforts, and deliver greater value to members in the year ahead.
