Oppose Animal Rights Activist Coalition Expanding Effort to Ban Octopus Farming
The animal activist efforts to ban octopus farming continues to expand. The Animal Policy Alliance is claiming a 27-member organization effort to do so at the Congressional and state levels. Notable organizations supporting an octopus farming ban campaign include but are not limited to:
- Animal Legal Defense Fund: OCTOPUS Act Reintroduced in the U.S. Senate - Animal Legal Defense Fund
- Animal Rights Initiative: New Jersey, Oregon, and North Carolina.
- Aquatic Life Institute: Octopus Farming Ban Campaign — Aquatic Life Institute
- Farm Forward: Octopus farming: What is it and why is it bad? | Farm Forward
- The Humane League: As Octopuses Win Welfare Protections, Fishes Should Be Next
- In Defense of Animals: URGENT: Last Chance to Stop the World’s First Octopus Factory Farm.
The National Aquaculture Association (NAA) recommends that members check their state legislature to determine whether an octopus farming bill has been introduced. If so, then use the NAA’s Octopus Farming: False Criticism and Unfounded U.S. Prohibition to inform your legislators that octopus farming is not feasible and the several criticisms cited to support a ban are false and misleading.
Why are we concerned and you should be as well?
The false criticisms are applicable to any farmed aquatic animal. Once in law, adding additional current or candidate aquatic animals is just a few steps away from occurring,
Please notify the NAA when you find the legislation introduced or have questions. Thank you!
